Greater Bilby

 Macrotis lagotis

Primary Threats

Feral Cat and Fox

World Population

Under 10,000

Two Bilbies

The largest surviving member of the bandicoot family, and the only surviving Bilby species. Hundreds of thousands of bilbies once roamed the spinifex plains of Australia's interior, tilling the soil for roots, fungi, insects, and other small morsels. When Europeans colonized Australia, they brought with them their cats, as well as foxes for sport hunting. Both soon spread across the continent, and by 1960s, the Lesser Bilby had already succumbed to extinction, along with the other 5 species of desert bandicoots, save the Greater Bilby. AWC has worked tirelessly to conserve the bilby and have reintroduced it to 6 sanctuaries where it was formerly extirpated, actively protecting 10% of the world population, and is poised to protect 50% of the world population in a few short years. Without active conservation work, the Greater Bilby would undoubtedly face the fate of the other desert bandicoots.
